Walkathon & Carnival
We Have Found the Treasure!
Perfect weather, hardworking kids and parents, the playground teeming with happy families enjoying a fun day…clearly, the Hillcrest Treasure was unearthed on Saturday at the 2008 Walkathon and Carnival, with a great event for the entire Hillcrest community! From the obstacle course to the snow cones to the live music, it was a fantastic day that celebrated the people and school that have brought us all together.
Congratulations to Will Fitzhugh (3rd) and Jackson Coldiron (3rd) for walking an amazing 73 laps each. That's over 18 miles (assuming 4 laps to a mile). Click here to download and print a tax receipt for your sponsors.
Thank you so much to all of our volunteers: Ms. Rothenberg and the fearless teachers and coaches who cheerfully took a seat in the splash booth; the middle school students who took time away from their own fun to help us out; the many parents who set up, manned the booths and BBQs, punched walkers' tickets, and helped clean up. I am sure that you have heard on the news about the proposed cuts to education that Governor Schwarzenegger is advocating. While it may sound like a foregone conclusion, OUSD indicates that in fact these cuts are not a done deal and that advocacy by parents like us can make a difference. I am providing you some information and sample communication (pdf) that you can use to contact representatives to help stop these cuts. Please read on if you can spend 5 minutes to help preserve public education. Also available is the full set of briefing materials (pdf) prepared by the District.
