I Want My HTV & My 1980s Bordeaux ... Wine Dinner
The 1980s provided a series of classic Bordeaux vintages so what a special opportunity for you to invite your friends to a 5-course gourmet meal with a selection of 1980s Bordeaux along with Peggy and Tim Toppin in their home.  Peggy and Tim will act as sommeliers/hosts and good friends as they host 6 guests.   If you ever wanted to treat friends to a gourmet experience with outstanding wines, this event is tailor made for you.   Peggy and Tim will guide you all through the tasting with their superior knowledge of these outstanding wines.

The evening will start with Champagne, followed by White Burgundy, then on to the Bordeaux.  The wines have been selected already:

  • 1986 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou (Robert Parker 92 pts "a dark ruby color with purple nuances, the bouquet…reveals scents of … sweet cranberry and black currant fruit … with aromas of steel, minerals, and earth. Rich and medium to full-bodied, ... intensely concentrated.")
  • 1988 Chateau Pichon Baron (Robert Parker 90 pts "promises to be one of the superstars of this vintage ... large-scaled … with an oaky, cassis, and licorice-scented nose, it is deep in color, rich, softly tannic.")
  • 1989 Chateau Lynch Bages (Robert Parker 95 pts "…enormous potential, hugely concentrated flavors….a nose of cedar and creme de cassis. Powerful and muscular, … superb concentration… in balance for a stunning evolution.")

Two highly regarded California wines, 1985 Duckhorn Cabernet and 1987 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet will join the tasting to see how they match up against the Chateaus of Bordeaux when they all reach 20 years of age.

Wine of this quality calls for a timeless menu!  Peggy will draw on her inner "Julia Child" to create haute French cuisine to pair with the wines.  The menu will be based on the time of year to allow for full use of the flavors of the season.  Past dinners have included lobster and rack of lamb.  Artesian cheeses to complement the wines and a dazzling dessert will definitely be on the menu.   This is the fourth dinner the Toppins have hosted for the Benefit; the menu is always just as memorable as the wine.  Wine value exceeds $1000, assuming, of course, one can buy them.

  • One winning bidder, six guests to join the Toppins for dinner
  • Mutually agreeable date

Dinner like you remember it in the 1980's… if you lived in Paris!

Thank you Peggy & Tim Toppin

18   IT’S STILL ROCK & ROLL TO ME!

The ROCK!
RAISE YOUR PADDLE “RYP” FOR PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT FOR ALL OF OUR KIDS!   LAST YEAR, we faced a yard with a dilapidated playstructure, failing safety code requirements.  On Benefit night, our parents said, “We make a better choice for our kids!”  We raised over $30,000 in 3 minutes & our kids reaped the benefits – a beautiful new playstructure with padding beneath it that meets safety codes! BUT THE JOB IS NOT DONE!  The structure is Phase 1 of a 3-part plan for a complete yard.  The playground also needs some essential items like benches to sit on when kids want to talk or read.  Tonight we ask you to RAISE YOUR PADDLE AGAIN FOR YOUR KIDS PHYSICAL FITNESS AND THE YARD.  PICTURE THIS: The ROCK – The ROCK supports upper-body strength development.  Mr. Inclan (our P.E. teacher) says we have many games (e.g., basketball, running) addressing fitness areas like aerobic capacity.  He says that to address abdominal, trunk extension and upper body strength and flexibility, the BEST equipment involves climbing.  While some of the playstructure’s climbing stations are great for some students, others need more challenges...hence the ROCK!  Hillcrest Teachers expressed strong support for the ROCK! The SUPERNOVA – Our kids love to spin!  The planned Supernova, an inclined spinning structure, where gravity is fed by weight which gets it spinning, with hand holds on the edges, holds up to 15 kids!  Now that’s a lot of cooperative play and spinning!  Great for balance and strength! BENCHES AND MORE – Not everyone can or wants to be on the structure, the ROCK and the Supernova.  Sometimes kids like to socialize at recess.  By raising your paddle, you will help fund all of the elements of a completed yard. How Does RYP Work?  Through RYP, you directly fund the playground revitalization.  During the Live Auction, our auctioneer will give everyone an opportunity to contribute directly to this cause.   Raise your paddle when the auctioneer calls the donation level you choose.  If you wish to contribute to RYP prior to the auction, please contact Shannon Broome.  100% of this donation is tax deductible!

Who Wins This Item?  Everyone’s a winner here – you can’t be outbid!  Please raise your paddles high and add your donation to complete the playground.

What’s Our Goal?  We know that to complete the playground, we need upwards of $50,000 for the ROCK, the Supernova, and various accessories -- a rockin’ cool campus.  Why the Need?  We need more than a playstructure for our kids.  We want a yard to serve all the kids, including middle schoolers. Why Should You RYP?  Research shows that physically fit children are confident and competent, willing to test their limits, and able to persevere when facing adversity. A good playground environment is key to our children’s success and happiness at school.

Be a Globetrotter!
It’s a basketball clinic with a real Harlem Globetrotter!  Your son or daughter will have a big thrill learning basketball's ins and outs, and some tricks, from this 5-year veteran of the Harlem Globetrotters, Roy "Zazu" Byrd (No. 31).  Zazu is a 6'4" guard hailing from Oakland who attended Patton College, where he averaged 15 points a game. After college, Byrd began working for the NBA's Golden State Warriors, where he choreographed dunks with the team's mascot before winning a slot on the Globetrotters.  With the kind of sparkling personality required of an "Ambassador of Goodwill" for one of the world's most popular sports, Zazu personifies the modern-day Globetrotters--or, as he will proudly tell you, the world's "best, smartest and cutest team."  This clinic will take place on a date to be mutually agreed upon with Zazu at a local basketball court (indoors).  Two children will spend an hour learning the tricks of the trade and hanging out with Zazu in this one-hour clinic.  He'll even autograph his photo for them!

  • One winning bidder for a clinic with Zazu and 2 children
  • Date to be agreed upon with Zazu!

Thank you Roy “Zazu” Byrd

The Amazing Race
Join 3 wild Hillcrest couples for a WILD evening of fun and friendly competition during the First (Annual?) Hillcrest Photo Safari and Dinner Party.  There is much we cannot tell you about the photo safari (its origins are mysterious, plus we signed some silly agreements ....), but picture an evening that is part scavenger hunt (finding the most unique items Oakland has to offer), part photo show (no photography skills needed, trust us), part gourmet dining and imbibing (Lynchburg Lemonade may just reappear), and part friendly (okay, brutal) competition.  You will not forget this evening.  The pictures will ensure that your grandchildren never forget it either.  We'll start at the Marchesotti’s home and offer you refreshments and instructions, and then send you off on your challenging journey armed with a Polaroid camera to "capture" your subjects on film.  Once all teams return, much laughter will ensue at the Klein's home as we review each team's "catch" during cocktail hour.  Then, the grand finale ... a delicious dinner and awards ceremony.  If you're single, grab a friend or date to join you – you won’t want to miss it!
