Metals Project

In this project you will be designing a brochure on your metal. The brochure will be in color, using both sides of an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper which will be folded in thirds. This will make 6 narrow pages:

Front cover (1 page):

Name of metal (e.g. Nickel)
Symbol (e.g. Ni)
Number in the Periodic Table (e.g. 28)
Number of Neutrons
Find a picture of the atomic structure of your element, showing the Protons, Neutrons, and the Electrons in their shells. Copy and Paste it into your brochure.
Your Names

Inside (3 pages) - Choose 4 of the following to do:

Description:

What does it look like? Describe in your own words.
Include a picture.
Fun fact: what is something interesting about it?

Occurrence:

In your own words, explain where your metal is it found on the Earth (e.g. What regions produce the most of it, what kind of rock is it found in, etc.).
Find a map of the Earth that shows where it is located and copy and paste it in.

Uses in Industry:

In your own words, explain how your metal is used in modern industry.
If possible, include a picture of one of the products that is made with it.

History:

When was your metal discovered?
How was it used historically?

Biological Role:

In your own words, describe how your metal is used by animals or plants. If it hurts animals or plants instead, explain what it does.

How much is it worth in U.S. Dollars?

Planets PowerPoint Project

This is a PowerPoint presentation on the planets.
This is a GROUP project: Each student is to work in a team.

The Powerpoint will have the following pages:
- Cover Page
- Mass (how much does it weigh?)
- Volume (how much space does it take up?)
- Diameter
- Gravity
- Distance from the Sun
- Chemical Composition of the Atmosphere
- Surface Temperature: Maximum and Minimum
- Composition of the Surface (what is it made out of?)
- Revolution Period (How long is it's year?)
- Rotation Period (How long is it's day?)
- Orbital Speed (how fast does it move through space?)
- Mythology (describe the god that gave it it's name)

Each page should:
- Have a Title
- Have the amount written in normal AND scientific notation (if appropriate)
- Have the units (km, kg, etc.)
- Compare it to something that we all know about. For example: if you say that the Mean Surface Temperature is 400 K, give an example of a temperature on our planet that we would know to compare it to.
- Have a picture to illustrate it

Upload My Favorite Things

Follow these steps to upload your My Favorite Things Powerpoint to the web:
- Open your final My Favorite Things document (with your name on it)
- Save As: save it into the same folder that it is in, and rename it to: My Favorite Things1-your name.
- Now take out any personal information that is in it: change your name to just your first name and initial, delete any photos of you.
- Save and close out of the file.
- To upload your Powerpoint document, open the following web page in a separate tab: Google Docs.
- Log in using:

- Click Upload
- Click Browse and locate the new file that you just made. Click OK.
- Click Upload button at the bottom of the page.
- WAIT: it will take a while. DON'T CLOSE YOUR BROWSER. Start the typing exercise (below).
