Science 6,7 Research Essay

Expository 5-Paragraph Research Essay due 12/18 or January 5: your choice.

Choose one of the three scientists to research:
Harry Hess, Alfred Wegener, or John Tuzo Wilson.

You will need three sources, and one can be from the handout in class. You may use the questions to guide your research, but it is optional.


Write a 5-paragraph essay with a powerful or interesting first sentence in the introduction, and the thesis statement being the final sentence of the introduction; three supportive points in the following three paragraphs; and a summarizing conclusion. Use the model essay as an example. Give yourself time to think about the prompt before you begin planning to write the essay. Complete the outline. Evaluate, proofread, edit, and revise your first draft using the rubric.

The first draft is due Wednesday, December 16.
Peer edit is due Thursday, December 17.
The final draft is due Friday, December 18.

If you choose January 5 as your due date:

The three sources, outline (this may be a rough draft and all your sources, outline and first draft may change, but you must have a first draft for your peer to edit and discuss alternative direction/revisions,) and first draft is due Wednesday, Dec., 16.
Peer edit is due Thursday, December 17.
The final draft is due Tuesday, January 5.
